3D-printed thermoplastic composite fasteners for single lap joint reinforcement

This study presents findings for the strength and failure mechanism of a 3D-printed Continuous Carbon Fibre reinforced Onyx (CCF/Onyx) Thermo-Plastic Composite Fastener (TPCF) single lap-joint (SLJ) made fibre/polymer composite by TPCF. The was carried out numerical analysis experiment methods including test sample design, manufacturing process mechanical test. fasteners were manufactured tested in shear mode two types joining arrangement: fastened hybrid bonded/fastened joints. Firstly, TPCF SLJ results show that addition CCF matrix post heat-treatment could significant enhance strength. then benchmarked against with steel fastening. load heat-treated CCF/Onyx 8 mm diameter 36% lower than bolt same size. Numerical model progressive damage simulation also created based on theory from Puck Schürmann achieving good correlation experimental data. Secondly, countersunk head pan forming used to reinforce bonded SLJ. fastener is 11.7% higher an increase ultimate deformation 9.1% compared 5 diameter. From study, it noted this attributed configuration reduce out-out-plane bending provide better crack arresting joint bonding.
